IPL: What it has done to Cricket.
"I'm glad I played most of my cricket before T20 came along. I'm not sure what relevance Tests will have in the future."—A current senior Indian player who's a Test cricket loyalist.
Sport like any other medium has to keep reinventing itself once in a while. The lure of money is irresistible. What are the immediate repercussions now that we have seen a few matches: 1) We have points for upholding the spirit of the game; not the “Royal Challenge Spirit” that Mallya was upholding during the inaugural game. 2) Please understand that the Bangalore team’s name, whose owner is selling spirits , does not amount to surrogate advertisement for alcohol. You cannot ask Anbumani Ramdass for his views on this. 3) The said spirit will be upheld (Held Hostage?) by men like Ponting, Symonds, Harbhajan, Ganguly, Warne and they will be awarded for doing so! 4) Every event like a boundary, sixer, wicket fall will have scantily clad girls cheering with some gusto. We will find it impossible to fathom if the spectator is cheering the cricket event or the cheering girls or both. 5) Australian players, who used to complain plaintively against excessive cricket, are fighting their own board to play in the IPL. A survey by the Australian Cricketers' Association showed that almost half the players contracted with Cricket Australia and the six states would consider early retirement to play T20 cricket in India. 6) The Englishmen too are clamouring for the rupee. 7) In New Zealand, where cricket doesn't pay much, it's as if some famished tramps had walked into a feast of kings. Ex-Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming said, "I saw the amounts of money being thrown around and I thought: wow, I hope they keep trading! It was incredible to be involved in it." 8) A year before the Mumbai auction, BCCI president Sharad Pawar had said: "India does not support a T20 world tournament. We feel it dilutes the importance of international cricket." Viola IPL was born. 9) If you are confused if you should applaud Murali if he takes Tendulkar’s wicket the fault is entirely with you for your inability to appreciate good cricket. 10) Is it still a mystery to you why T20 is still played with Cricket bats and balls and such paraphernalia normally attached to the game? Please innovate and send it to BCCI. Please do not forget to patent it though!
